How to Check Watch Timing at Home Properly

A watch that appears to be keeping good time can still be gaining or losing enough each day to matter over a week. Knowing how to check watch timing properly gives an owner a clearer picture of a mechanical watch’s condition, whether it is a recently acquired Rolex, an older Omega, a Tudor worn daily or a vintage piece reserved for careful use.

The most useful home check is simple: compare the watch against a reliable time reference over several days, with the watch fully wound and worn as you normally wear it. A timing machine can add useful technical detail, but it should support rather than replace sensible observation of the watch in real-world conditions.

Start with a reliable time reference

Use a radio-controlled clock, a reputable time signal or the time displayed by a phone that is set automatically by the network. Avoid comparing against another mechanical watch. Even a well-regulated example may have its own small daily variation, so it is not a dependable benchmark.

Set the watch precisely when the seconds hand reaches 60. If the watch has hacking seconds, pull the crown out as the reference reaches the next minute, wait until both are aligned, then push the crown home. On a non-hacking vintage watch, set it as closely as possible and record the starting difference rather than trying to force a perfect synchronisation.

For an automatic or manual-wind mechanical watch, ensure it has sufficient power before beginning. A manual movement should be fully wound unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. An automatic watch that has only been worn lightly may be operating with a reduced power reserve, which can affect its rate.

How to check watch timing over several days

Record the difference between the watch and the reference at the same time each day. Note whether the watch is ahead or behind, then calculate the change over 24 hours. For example, if the watch was two seconds slow on Monday and seven seconds slow on Tuesday, it has lost five seconds over that day.

Continue for at least three days and preferably seven. One day can be misleading. Mechanical movements respond to mainspring tension, temperature, activity and resting position, so a short test may capture an unusually good or poor day.

Keep the conditions reasonably consistent. Wear the watch in your normal routine, rather than constantly winding it or placing it in a different position every few hours. The point is to establish the rate you are likely to experience, not merely the best figure the movement can produce in a controlled setting.

A simple record should include the date, the displayed difference and how the watch was used. It is also worth noting if the watch was left dial-up, dial-down, crown-up or crown-down overnight. This can reveal positional variation that would otherwise be easy to miss.

Understanding seconds per day

Watch timing is usually expressed as seconds gained or lost per day. A watch that gains six seconds in 24 hours is running at +6 seconds per day. A watch that loses four seconds in the same period is running at -4 seconds per day.

Many modern chronometer-certified mechanical watches are expected to perform within a narrow published tolerance when tested under laboratory conditions. That does not guarantee identical performance on the wrist. A Rolex Superlative Chronometer, for instance, is specified to stringent standards after casing, while an older chronometer-certified watch may have been tested to a different historical standard and may now be affected by age, service history and wear.

For a recently serviced modern luxury watch, a stable rate within a few seconds per day is generally encouraging. For a vintage watch, a slightly wider but consistent rate can be entirely acceptable, especially where originality and sympathetic preservation matter more than pursuing a modern factory specification. The key concern is often instability: a watch that gains two seconds one day, loses 15 the next, then stops before the power reserve should be investigated.

Check different resting positions

A mechanical movement does not necessarily run at the same rate in every position. Gravity affects the balance and escapement, particularly where there is wear, imperfect poising or variation in lubrication. This is normal to a degree, and it is one reason high-grade movements are adjusted in multiple positions.

After establishing the daytime rate, try leaving the watch in one position overnight for two or three nights. Dial-up and crown-up are useful starting points. Compare the result with your usual overnight position. If the watch consistently gains when dial-up but loses when crown-up, you may be able to use this knowledge to offset a small daily deviation.

Do not treat positional adjustment as a substitute for servicing. It is a practical owner’s observation, not a cure. A large difference between positions, or a sudden change from the watch’s previous behaviour, may point to a movement that needs professional assessment.

What a timing machine can tell you

A timegrapher, often called a timing machine, listens to the ticks of a mechanical watch and presents measurements that cannot be obtained from a simple reference-time test. The principal readings are rate, amplitude and beat error.

Rate is the estimated daily gain or loss in seconds. It is useful, but it is not the whole story. A watch may show an attractive rate in one position on a machine yet perform differently once worn.

Amplitude measures the rotation of the balance wheel, expressed in degrees. Healthy amplitude depends on the movement, its design, lift angle, state of wind and position. As a broad indication, a fully wound modern movement often shows stronger amplitude than a tired or poorly lubricated one, but there is no single figure that proves a watch is healthy. Reading amplitude accurately also depends on entering the correct lift angle for the calibre.

Beat error shows the difference between the two halves of the balance’s oscillation. A low figure is generally desirable. Excessive beat error can indicate that the beat is out of adjustment, though the acceptable level depends on the watch and context. It should be interpreted by someone who understands the movement rather than viewed in isolation.

Consumer timing apps and basic microphones can be useful for curiosity, but their readings can be affected by background noise, case construction, bracelet contact and the algorithm used. A professional machine in the hands of an experienced watchmaker is more dependable, particularly for assessing a valuable watch before purchase or sale.

What timing results may be telling you

A watch running consistently fast can be magnetised, particularly if the change was sudden. Exposure to speakers, magnetic clasps, tablets, induction hobs or certain bags can cause the hairspring coils to stick together, making the watch gain significantly. Demagnetisation is straightforward when performed correctly, but a substantial gain should not be assumed to be magnetism without inspection.

A watch that is losing time, showing poor amplitude or stopping early may have low power, dried lubricants, wear within the movement or an issue with the automatic winding system. On an older watch, it may simply be due for service. Avoid repeatedly adjusting the regulator yourself. A small adjustment can affect more than the visible rate, and careless handling risks damage to the balance assembly or hairspring.

Water resistance is separate from timekeeping, but it should be considered alongside it. A watch may run well while having compromised seals. If a watch has been exposed to moisture, shows condensation beneath the crystal or has an unknown service history, arrange a professional inspection promptly.

When to ask for professional assessment

A stable rate that is marginally outside an expected tolerance is not always a cause for concern. It depends on the model, age, service record and how the watch is worn. By contrast, seek professional advice if the rate changes abruptly, the watch gains or loses minutes rather than seconds, the power reserve is noticeably reduced, or the seconds hand behaves irregularly.

Before buying a pre-owned luxury watch, timing-machine results form part of a wider condition assessment. They should sit alongside authentication, movement inspection, case and bracelet condition, serial and reference checks, service documentation, and an assessment of originality. A favourable timegrapher reading alone cannot confirm provenance, and a slightly imperfect reading does not necessarily make a properly represented vintage watch undesirable.
